Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Saturday, September 21. 2024Overseeding a tired lawnYes, it can be done. Lawns are sort of silly things, but good for kids. I like a Cape Cod lawn - which is no lawn. Sand, some wild grasses, some Black Pines and Scrub Oak. Zero maintenance. Well, we can't all have that. Deserts are easy too except for the golf courses. OK, around here late September and early October is the time to overseed. Grasses like cool weather, and the new seed needs to be watered once or twice for at least two weeks unless it rains: How to overseed a lackluster lawn. As we've said before, lawns are artificial, gardens really. With irrigation they are almost hydroponic gardens which is why they need fertilizer, etc. To make them less artificial, I like to have the mower mulch cut grass, and fallen leaves, into the grass unless there is a grass-suffocating leaf fall.

Saturday, September 7. 2024Lawn care: Power seeding timeIt must be nice not to have a lawn. Out in Wellfleet, you just have beach grasses and sand. Of course, fancy places in Nantucket have irrigated, fertilized regular lawns. Totally fake and unnatural, but some people expect it. I have around an acre of regular lawn. I'd prefer 50 acres of meadow, but it's what I have here. No choice but to keep it civilized. We have posted many times about lawn care. I understand that a lawn is meant to imitate the sheep-mowed English estates. Lawns are good for croquet and soccer. Plus they just look nice around a house in a temperate zone. Today, just about getting your lawn power-seeded if it needs it. In September around here, it can work pretty well.

The machines that pull out plugs work best. In southern climates (in the US), best done in Spring. In cooler climates, in September. Friday, May 10. 2024Life in America: How to get rid of money productively
It is enjoyable and satisfying to do even if your greedy wallet screams in pain. Suggestions: Replace all bad wood and stone. Get house painted expertly (costs more). Re-point your chimneys. Install a new gas furnace. Get a lawn service. Get new outdoor lighting. Replace and expand outdoor stone seating or decking, and throw in a nice stone outdoor fireplace with a pizza oven. Those things are good starters for getting rid of money: Middle English: from Old French moneie, from Latin moneta ‘mint, money’, originally a title of the goddess Juno, in whose temple in Rome money was minted.

Sadly, it's been nuts for slightly over 2 weeks with a lot going on. I can share information or a few things, because it's been mostly good, but there are a few items. 1. Due to Chemo and Radiology daily (5 days) I have seen my health drop. Not significantly, but enough to definitely feel awful. Nausea, then treated. Weakness, handled by some improvements which manage a bit more extensively. The last 2 weeks allow the assistance of steroid assistance allowed in lower levels. Headaches higher the past 3 days. Treatments allowed in higher levels. As mentioned, my hair is long cut (and I'll share my lovely look now lately). 2. Overall feeling better in treatment as weekly doctor meeting have opened the assistance and treatment gains. Greatly appreciated. I have been in the city twice over 4 years, will add tomorrow and next week - though weakness is down slightly. 3. Radiology lost one day due to errors wasting 3 hours waiting last week - my day shifted by one day so my last day is 4/15 Monday - but I am heading immediately to leave Mrs. Bulldog behind as her parents will allow me to resolve in FL as I'll need restness and softness at the local beach. It will be helpful. Great to have healthy in-laws.

Thursday, December 1. 2022A winter warning: 25,000 chimney fires/year (re-posted)
I am reposting this because I had a chimney fire yesterday morning, shortly after our men's Bible study group left my study. This has been my second chimney fire here. Fortunately, I am not too far from the firehouse. I had this flue cleaned last winter, and my sweep was scheduled to come again next week. (I use my fireplace daily.) I climbed a ladder and sprayed the top of the chimney with a lawn hose. Seemed to work. If you use a fireplace regularly, you need a chimney sweep. In the past 20 years, we have had two chimney fires here, and one at the Farm. It's not a joke. Spring and summer are the cheapest times to get it done. Addendum: What burned down Parliament?

Monday, August 1. 2022Tipping
Barber, delivery guy, food service person, lawn guys, garbage guys. And the Dunkin Donuts staff. It makes everybody feel good. That applies to the US. It's different in Europe, where they often apply a service fee. Who knows who gets that money? In Europe, tip like a miser even if you feel otherwise.

Wednesday, November 10. 2021Autumn leaves, and lawnsNever a bad idea to mulch some leaves at this time of year. Not a good idea to leave a lawn blanketed with leaves for weeks, though. A lawn is an unnatural garden - like all gardens.

Saturday, August 1. 2020Saturday Verse: Louise GluckMatins You want to know how I spend my time? Monday, July 6. 2020A weekend of fledgelings
There is a fledgeling Catbird out my window right now in the rose bushes, asking Mom and Dad for a bug or two. We have fully-spotted Robins, still with their wide mouths, on the lawn. A bunch of tiny House Wrens in the shrubbery. A fledgeling Cardinal in a Holly tree. Four baby Barn Swallows, sitting in a line on a dead branch. Noisy baby Grackles on the lawn and fledgeling Crows cawing for food in the treetops. And, down the lane, two fledgeling Ospreys exercising their wings on a high nest, preparing for their first adventures.
Monday, June 22. 2020White Elephant, still for sale Captain Lorenzo Baker's 1800 mansion, in downtown Wellfleet, MA. He was the banana king. 12 bedrooms, 5 baths. And a two-story giant barn which needs work. In fact, it all needs work. No report on plumbing and heating. Roof looks ok for now. Huge lawn for croquet, lawn tennis, badminten, frisbee, dogs, etc. Gee, as a bonus you get a Resident Beach Pass. It's in town - no waterfront. Own a piece of history, with plenty of room for all of your best friends. What is it in the human heart that wants to possess wonderful, charming things? I mean, rather than just appreciating them. Is it a transmuted sexual thing? Nice lawnsI have posted often about grass lawns in the past. Meadows are far better than lawns, but pretty la I happen to feel that lawns are perfect parts of English-style gardens. Lawn is one part of an appealing garden. How can one minimize the artifice and fragility of the unnatural thing which is a mowed lawn (especially in the northern half of the US)? - Irrigation. It fools the grasses into thinking it's Spring. - Topdressing. It's what woodland grasses get naturally from fallen leaves and detritus. - Aeration. It's what grasses get naturally from worms, moles, and digging animals.
Sunday, April 26. 2020Will this be a year without trout-fishing? At least I think I will do some practice fly casting on the lawn. Why not? I can always use practice with that game. Rain and wind just make it more interesting. Saturday, April 18. 2020Update on Status and Other Things Going On
To begin with, there's 'reinfection' taking place, although at very low levels. I'm skeptical of these stories. My guess is these are relapses. I almost experienced a relapse, as did other people I know, when I thought I was healthy enough to rake leaves for one hour. ONE HOUR. That was 4 days after the last symptoms. Nope. Wound up in bed the whole next day. Another person (who had scolded me telling me to be more careful) thought it wise to try and cut his lawn the day after I tried to rake. 6 days out, he wound up in bed for a day after only pushing the mower for 10 minutes. Still another, crazier, friend went for a 3 mile run a week after. He finished a mile and had to struggle to walk home, spending 2 days in bed. My feeling is people recover, feel good, try to do too much, and relapse. Since my raking adventure, I've only gone on walks. None longer than an hour, once a day. I'm still winded, but feeling stronger. As the linked article points out, "For now, the most likely explanation of why people are retesting positive seems to be that the test is picking up remnants of the virus." I'm sure if I was tested again, I'd likely be positive. So I'm taking it easy, not pushing it. I'll try to push a little a week from now, when I'll (hopefully) feel much better. I've regained 3 of the 8 pounds I lost, so my appetite is back, and that was likely water weight, due to how dehydrated I was. At this point, I have learned quite a bit more about the nature of what I had. I'm still not overwhelmed by its dangers. I know 10 people who tested positive. I know 10 more who definitely had it, but their doctors told them not to get tested because 'tests are for those in real need'. I have a friend at FEMA, instrumental in doing work in NYC, who told me the scare stories are just scare stories. They saw what was really going on, handling resource procurement and (now) distribution to other states. I know people who lost relatives, and we do believe (as we found out today) a relative who was in a home may have contracted it and died. So I have not said (nor would I say) this is not a dangerous virus. Certainly it requires an abundance of caution and respect. I don't believe in 'solutions' only trade offs, when politics is involved. You have to hurt someone to help someone with a political solution. It is inevitable. As a result, I believe this 'solution' was overkill of the worst kind. The trade offs are starting to be apparent...and will become more stark as they extend this.
