The American Barn Owl is rarely seen or heard. They like grasslands and marshes for their nocturnal hunting, and they need good nesting sites. Mice and rats are preferred foods. The loss of agricultural land in the Northeast US has probably been an issue. They do not like deep woods.
We've had good open barn sites for them, but never used. The American Barn Owl. I've only seem them when crossing grassland roads.
Funny to see a family of them on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. I guess there are plenty of rats in Central Park : https://www.westsiderag.com/2026/10/09/the-late-night-birders-flocking-to-the-uws-to-capture-a-shot-of-the-resident-barn-owl-family
