Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

re: Cameras watching
I understand the resistance and misgivings people have about Flock cameras, but I also understand the other side of it. One third of homicides in my metro area are solved using them. People driving without insurance are given tickets because the databas knows they're uninsured. Hit and run dirtbags are tracked back to their houeses and arrested because we can follow them home on camera. The article states that police used to have to get warrants to track where you've been. Not true. They don't need a warrant to ask your co-workers, neighbors, and family about you. Neither do they need a warrant to look through your trash on the curb or collect your DNA from a piece of gum you spit out on the sidewalk. They can gather quite a bit of data about you before they need a warrant. Do Flock cameras hold very much private information? When you're outside of your property you don't have a right to privacy. You can be followed, your picture can be taken, your routes and habits can be recorded by anyone who chooses to do so. I don't have a problem with cameras in public. I have a problem with the misuse of them. Here are a few suggestions to fix the problem:
1. Remove the ability of any government/public entity to fine or otherwise use the cameras for monetary enrichment. 2. Require any government entity/individual to first get a warrant before they can search or use the data collected. 3. Place serious punishment for misuse, I suggest a mandatory 5 years in prison for any government individual who misuses the cameras/data. 4. Require that any government entity using these cameras have a robust and responsive system of FOIA to allow any citizen to see any and all video/pictures of them, their family and their properties at no charge. By robust I mean no refusal and by responsive I mean within 24 hours or the government entity must pay the citizen fines for every hour it delays. 5. ALL government cameras must be on a 16 sq/ft mount that is painted in orange and black stripes AND have flashing red lights to identify them. Comply with these simple rules and I am 100% in favor of flock cameras. You share many concerns that others do too. Off the top of my head my thoughts on your points are as follows.
1. One of the best uses of these cameras is to find people who are driving with expired licenses or no insurance. This is how you catch illegals with no insurance, too. I see no reason to not fine them when caught. But, I understand the suggestion and don't think it's unreasonable. 2. I don't see why a warrant is required for public information. In the Tulsa area where I live, they can use the cameras in real time to find people who fled active crimes. Kidnapped children, murderers, gang-related mass shootings, and hit-and-run vehicles have all been stopped in real time with these cameras. It's possible to never again have a police chase that risks lives because the cameras can follow them home. 3. I agree completely. Severe punishments for misuse. Clear policies for use and purpose. No one should ever be a cop again who uses them to track a girlfriend or wife. 4. This isn't secret or privileged information so I don't understand your concern about it. I would suggest that all data be deleted after 30 days. I am in favor of ending all traffic fines. This is greatly misused by cities as a backdoor tax and often innocent people are charged with infractions they didn't commit because the effort to enrich the government coffers is so tempting. Instead levy points against the drivers license or for more serious charges take the license and/or put them in jail for a few days or weeks. The money changes everything and encourages fraud.
Make the warrants easy to get but with strong punishments for misuse. It is a 4th amendment violation to allow the government to search through our personal data willy nilly. For whatever reason as has been proved time and time again the government, i.e. individuals employed in government, cannot be trusted. The constitution was written to limit government and that is exactly what we should do. I do not believe this information is anymore "public" then my phone conversations or my texts. As for mounting cameras on large clearly visible platforms, these cameras are being hidden, often not where they can observe traffic and are at that point clearly being misused. Unless we want a soviet style constant monitoring system we need to get ahead of this problem quickly. Destroyed in 30 days! When you purchase a gun from a store you fill out a form which they can use to verify that you are not a criminal and can legally buy it. The form is supposed to be destroyed after that function is processed. The government was caught keeping these forms and have done it now for decades. They have even fought to keep the data in court. And they have even chosen to further brake the laws by doing it in secret. Our government(s) cannot be trusted!!! That is why they must be reigned in whenever they begin to misuse their powers. from the article:
QUOTE: Patrick G. Eddington says that even law-abiding citizens should be concerned about the growing number of Flock cameras in communities. Cato Institute “I don’t think there’s any doubt that this is ultimately a Fourth Amendment issue,” he told The Post, referring to the amendment which protects Americans against unreasonable searches and seizures by the government and requires warrants to be based on probable cause. “When people are just going about their daily lives, and having the government collect this data on them in the absence of any kind of criminal predicate, that itself is absolutely constitutionally problematic,” Eddington said. Who 'owns' FLOCK or other ALPR data?
Locals may say it's gone in xx days but what happens when its downloaded by other jurisdictions? My city provided a copy of the original purchase order to buy the first fleet of FLOCKS, but it shows no signature and the buy was apparently never discussed and approved at council. My next FOIA query is about to be delivered to city hall. When compared to the inescapable all seeing eyes any whoo hoo over recovering a stolen car is just lipstick on a pig. Cheers Canada has become America’s northern security threat
https://www.theblaze.com/columns/opinion/canada-has-become-americas-northern-security-threat This is nonsense.
Canada need not treat the US as an enemy. But we can no longer assume the US will remain a fully reliable security partner. Thanks for the civil reply, JJM. I had you in mind when I posted this.
BTW, despite our national differences, I am glad to still see you commenting here at MF. I hope you continue to give us your perspective. I sympathize with Canadians. Your government and media are lying to you so you do not understand that this is about trade and Canadian companies and the government cheating by bringing in Chinese goods and using their position to send them to the U.S. against our agreement with Canada. All Canada needs to do is negotiate with good faith and then live up to the agreement and all will be well. But Carney and the EU prefer to gas light Canadians so they can use your patriotism to continue to push Canada away from the U.S. and into the arms of the EU and China. Your "elbows up" should be replaced with "wake up".
We don't need your patronizing "advice", thanks. It's the US doing all the pushing away here, not Canada.
The person who is not negotiating in "good faith", as you put it, is sitting in a gaudy, gold-encrusted office in Washington and is responsible for all of this. He started shouting his mouth off and shooting himself in the foot soon after he was sworn in and hasn't stopped to catch his breath yet. Anyway, his presidency is fast approaching the halfway mark and he looks and sounds increasingly like a lame duck every day; I mean, what could be lamer right now than letting the worthless Iranian regime make the US look foolish? https://theconservativetreehouse.com/blog/2026/08/14/white-house-notes-canada-biggest-enabler-of-transshipped-chinese-products-to-u-s-market/

None of this would be happening if a certain US president hadn't started his tariff war and started making erratic noises over Greenland of all places. Greenland! You couldn't make this up.
It's also worth remembering that the biggest consumer of exported Chinese products in the world is the US. Wrong! Canadian tariffs started the tariff war. The U.S. Asked Trudeau to end tariffs on U.S. goods and he refused. All Trump is looking for is a fair, to both countries, trade agreement. Also as an example of Canadian companies duplicity; they were importing cheap Chinese aluminum and using the favorable (to Canada) trade agreement to sell it to the U.S. even though that was explicitly forbidden.
Greenland: The North West passage is a real thing. China is trying to get a "belt and road" through there. Greenland is right in the middle and at risk of Chinese manipulation. Greenland must be protected and since it literally overlooks most of the North West passage it is a critical component of protecting North America from China and Russia. Finland and Canada can gnash their teeth and send strong worded letters but the second China goes into Greenland or oversteps into the North West passage Greenland WILL be protected by the U.S. (Unless we get another useless communist party president like Obama or Biden). the biggest consumer of exported Chinese products in the world is the US. Yeah! And Trump just dramatically cut that and there will be more cuts coming. AND we don't want products from other countries with an Chinese components either. And THAT is going to be a big problem for a lot of countries who manufacture products using components from China. You are right that possible after the midterms and certainly in 2028 Trump policies will be attacked and restricted by our home grown communist party but that will hardly be good news to Canada. Make no mistake if China declares war on the U.S. there will be an asterisk there with Canada's name on it. You may not like the U.S. or you may dislike Trump but anyone that comes after us includes Canada too as a footnote. You are stuck with us. Sorry! |
