Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

QUOTE: International Law? What’s That? International law is composed of treaties between nations, including the United Nations charter. Under the United States Constitution, treaties, when ratified by the Senate (Article II, Section 2, Clause 2), are the "supreme Law of the Land" (Article VI, Clause 2). That includes the United Nations Charter, which was established to "save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind". The American Republic was founded on the principle that no one person should have the unilateral power to make important decisions for the entire nation. The United Nations rejected that no one nation or one person should have the unilateral power to make decisions that would throw the world into turmoil. "supreme Law of the Land"
So the treaty overrides the constitution? That was a mistake. My only question is were our diplomats and congress just ignorant or did they intentionally act against the interest of the people??? OneGuy: So the treaty overrides the constitution?
Treaties don't override the Constitution. They are laws under the Constitution. They are the "supreme Law of the Land". (Most treaties also require enabling legislation.) OneGuy: My only question is were our diplomats and congress just ignorant or did they intentionally act against the interest of the people??? The vote in the Senate, held even as the war raged on, was 89-2, so the United Nations treaty had almost universal support. Also keep in mind that no binding United Nations resolution can pass without the concurrence of the United States. Two world wars were fought based on aggression and conquest. Hitler promised peace, then brutally broke that promise. The United Nations was established to help prevent the outbreak of another global conflagration. Whatever grievances people had over existing borders or forms of government were to be resolved through negotiation, not war. That's why most wars since then, e.g. Vietnam or Korea, have been cast as civil wars. That's why Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and Russia's invasion of Ukraine are considered war crimes. The United Nations is a flawed institution. (What human institution is not?). But to paraphrase Churchill: “Jaw, jaw is better than war, war.” Yea. Just call up the world police to enforce those treaties. Oh. Never mind.
I could at least treat liars like yourself as not completely devoid of credibility if you had a bit of consistency. China flaunts every paragraph of the WTO treaty and all kinds of international humanitarian laws and you stick your nose up their rear. Democrats distort laws beyond all recognition to persecute Trump and you laugh and defend it. Democrat presidents offer large rewards for the arrest of Maduro, crickets. Trump arrests him, you criticize Trump. Have you ever engaged in good faith? Because you obviously have the raw cognitive power to know that most of what you say is not true. James: Just call up the world police to enforce those treaties.
The United States has made promises. Does the word of the Americans mean anything? Or is it just jibber-jabber while they sharpen their swords? Do you support the power of one man to unilaterally decide who should run any other country at any time without justification? If you were to, instead, argue for justification ("Iran might get the bomb"), then you are arguing within the context of international law. Two rhetorical questions to end the kiddieZ um... "logical" rant.
Remember when you could buy a refrigerator and 30 years later you moved it to the garage because you upgraded the kitchen. You kept using the old fridge and after a few years the new fridge quit working so you spent another $1600 for a new fridge but it had a filter and computer controlled everything. Then one dry day you got a static shock when you changed the ice dispenser to crushed ice and everything quit working? The good news is it only took them three days to fix it and $500. And by the way that old, now 40+ YO fridge in the garage keeps working and the only extra electronics on it that could go bad is the interior light and inexplicably that is still working too. Great memories huh!
I bought Kenmore front loader, washer and dryer in 1997, from Sears. They’re still working. They survived two separate renters. Not once have they needed repairs.
We had a Kenmore top load washer about the same vintage and every six months or so the small plastic coupler would break. It was a very poor design.
On the other hand, our Kenmore dishwasher has been working great for almost 15 years. Lol... got a 30 year old one out in the garage now. Had to replace the thermostat on it, and the heater sensor for the defrost circuit - but it outlasted two Samsungs (things kept icing up SOLID, no matter what could be done...) and the GE we've got now is about 8 years old w/no signs of problems.
re Free the Appliances! Turn out the lights on federal efficiency standards
Trump overturns Biden-era efficiency rules for household and commercial appliances This from last May. I remember the news release but haven't seen any follow up. I don't know that it repealed all these onerous regulations, but it was a start. https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/5293104-trump-signs-legislation-rolling-back-biden-efficiency-rules/ re Germany Is Now Officially A Planned Economy
It's a good read. I had missed it. It sounds like the new grift will be hydrogen. There could be a lot of money to squander here. The odds of reversing Germany's economic death spiral look increasingly long. Partly out of respect and gratitude for all those guys posting those high quality videos on how to fix stuff, I try to fix it myself.
Lotta satisfaction fixing stuff. Plus you save enough money to buy more tools. So far replaced garage door spring, fixed iced up Gladiator freezer, minor electrical repairs, Linux install... 35 year old Kenmore dishwasher is next. “Replaced garage door spring…” Wow! Respect to you, sir. I would rather work in a electrically ‘live’ panel, than work on those arm breakers.
