Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

A truant blog editor

Well, we were in Paris this morning, and in Lascaux yesterday - no, the day before yesterday.


I doubt I missed any other than ephemeral news, and it was nice to avoid the internet. I'll post photos.


Oh, I should mention that I miss our past contributors. Maybe we don't have enough market share.

have you noticed a difference in Paris status-post immigration influx? i go every few years, and haven't been too horrified as of yet, although i studiously avoid up north, and just admire Sacre Coeur from afar

Paris is my sentimental favorite but I also am afraid to visit again. I like to take the Metro and I like to walk the city. I'm just not sure it is safe anymore.

I was there in 22 and 23. I was not prepared to like it, but I absolutely loved it. Rode the metro quite a bit and didn't find it frightening. We on Rue de Martyrs in the 9th on a direct line to Sacre Coeur. Took the train out of Gare de Nord and I wouldn't want to spend much time up there. Actually went to the flea market at Clingancourt and went to the wrong one--on the street. Sketchy. Even though we have a friend there who may want us to return, I don't know. I'm glad to have done it. I wish I could have seen it in its prime.

I was in Paris almost 55 years ago. I saw all the tourist sites, of course, but didn't like it much and didn't feel welcome there. We were a couple of Ugly American snot-nosed students, I suppose, so I try not to hold it against them. But... Amiens, ahh, that was France to me. A WWll French Resistance fighter, after hearing our voices, hugged my friend and me and blubbered effusive thanks to us. We, of course, didn't deserve it in any way - we hadn't even been born before the war was over. He did it just because we were Americans. Made me cry. Still does. He's the one who formed in me the soft spot I'll always have for the French.

But, Paris? No.

At least, in the nicer parts.
