We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
At 78 y.o. even I signed up to check it out. Another good source for schooling... and another good source that calls for vouchers to replace the current government monopoly schooling system.
That and a tiger mom can create a genius. We are letting our children down and for what; so a union has more power and teachers get more money and time off. Honestly we would be better off to come to an agreement with the teachers and unions to pay them off what they are now getting and all we ask in return is that they don't go within 100 yds of any school kids. Then give all parents vouchers for private schools.
I'm for vouchers all the way. I think all schools should be private and everyone should receive vouchers so they can afford to send their kids to them.
But it will take more work than many people realize. Likely, your state will need its constitution amended. You will also need to take some very small steps. It's not easy to convince people to do things entirely different from what they've ever known. And vouchers for private schools are totally foreign to most people. They have a gut reaction against it as if you're trying to keep their kids from having any education.
You have to keep some eye on the bright ones, putting good things in front of them. But it is mostly better to leave them alone. Many geniuses were autodidacts.
No school system in the country can show that they are improving them, unless we count the peer influence of all the cool stuff the other kids are exposing them to. The school districts that have the best 12th graders have the best kindergartners as well. Funny how that works.
Those districts will still use those scores to show they are better, but once you know how to look under the hood the game is up.
