We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Sounds like hate crime hoaxes are evolving to the point where they will be acknowledged as real. The rationalization will be that white people have long thought about perpetrating hate crimes and the hate hoaxer is just doing white people the favor acting on those thoughts.
One wonders when we'll see the ultimate hate crime? A black person's suicide by hanging with a note pinned to them that they were lynched by white people?
I think that most college level activism has it's roots in the anti-Vietnam war activism of the 60's and 70's or civil rights activism. The young people get to college and learn about the hippie generation and all the attention they got and are jealous and want something that they can embrace. In fact today's students have it pretty good and there isn't really something to rally around. Thus the incredibly picayune movements that they embrace, like personal pronouns, etc.
The fake hate crimes surge fits this mold perfectly. Young minority kids hear about the "great" accomplishments of the civil rights activists and feel that they missed out and want to be just like their hero Malcom X or someone. SO, why not fake a hate crime and be the hero and share the limelight? What the hell it is rare that they ever get any punishment if they are exposed.
