We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
He who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool; avoid him. He who knows not and knows that he knows not is a student; teach him. He who knows and knows not that he knows is asleep; wake him. He who knows and knows that he knows is a wise man; follow him.
There is interesting knowledge, there is essential knowledge and there is useless knowledge.
It is interesting to study classical music, to know the work of most of the classical composers and to be able to recognize it when you hear it. Except for pleasure and the satisfaction of knowing this it is merely interesting knowledge.
Much of what we learn falls into this category. School doesn't teach you how to budget, how to save a life, how to invest, how to avoid bad people and pick the right mate. School mostly teaches you interesting and useless knowledge and even then doesn't do it very well.
Do you know how to forage edibles in the wild and live off the land for an extended period of time? Do you know how to make a camp from only what the wilderness provides and survive a sub-freezing night, night after night? Do you know first aid and advanced first aid? Do you know how to survive without the village to take care of you?
Iwo Jima, South Iwo Jima, and this new Fukutoku-Okanoba volcano are all on a N-S pressure ridge in the Phillipine plate 100m west of the subduction zone where the Pacific plate dives under it. It's kind of a pressure fold area, as the Philippine plate gets squeezed ever harder.
Tectonic geology news is great, because it's one of the few things in life that are almost apolitical.
