Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Albion's Seed, The "New Right," and Trump

The Problem of the New Right


As I see it, practical politics does not require philosophical consistency.  However, there are attitudes with long histories which continue to shape practical politics.


Is there a "New Right"?  I do not know what "Right" means in a country in which freedom from overly-intrusive government is termed "Right".

The "right" has no practical value any more than the "left" has any value. They are seating arrangements in French politics. A far better term is authoritarian/totalitarian versus anarchist. Put communists and fascists in the a/t category. Libertarians are closer to anarchists as they want minimal government. Republicans are about midway down the range while democratic socialists are next door to the fascists and then communists. To find republicans and democrats confused over left and right isn't surprising. And to throw fascists in the right is ridiculous as they are nearly as authoritarian as the communists. The last thing fascists want is no rule of law.

I found the essay disappointing. It is a bloviating wander through who he likes and doesn't like in conservatism, with clever little phrases about how the baddies are so bad and the goodies so intelligent. He refers to Fischer's wonderful Albion's Seed as central to his thesis, then wanders off with a quote from another of Fischer's works and a lot of hand-waving. He likes using big-emotion words, like Appalachia or Puritan, as if those mere incantations prove that he must know a great deal about historical American culture, and therefore be right.

It would be nice if he bolstered his argument with any evidence, so we could know if it made any sense or not. Seeing none, I declare the meeting adjourned.

I'm a little slower than you, I actually had to read about half the article to reach the conclusion that it wasn't me, it was him. And I agree with you whole-heartedly on AVI's eloquence.

I got as far as Tucker Carlson before I bailed, not caring enough even to figure out what point he might ultimately be trying to make about "Albion's Seed."

Right and left mean little if anything nowadays. Just as liberal and conservative mean nothing. I mean, if the assholes populating National Review these days are so called conservatives, then the term simply means allies of the degenerate scum who populate the left.

Well, I spent over 30 minutes, reading that and all the comments. Then the comments here. I found it odd, that the OP didn't mention the 100 million Mexican and Central and South Americans that have come to the US in the last 40 years. No one mentioned how " Trump " did better in the Rio Grande counties of Texas in 2020 than any Republican EVER... he came VERY close in several counties... and that's counties with 85%+ Hispanics... and Democrat machines for politics.

Albion's Seed isn't useful post 1930's. Too much immigration. The post WWII socialization of the US is also unmentioned. And blaming the right for not fighting the culture war. How would that have happened? The culture has been left since inception. There was never any " right " culture. Only limits on what the left could push.. and the pushed until they have no limits and now censor critics on the right.
