We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Wood Hyacinth

The Wood Hyacinth is not a true Hyacinth, the popular bulb brought to Europe from Turkey.


The Wood Hyacinth, or English Bluebell, or Common Bluebell, is a native of Western Europe. Today, there are many cultivars of this fine April/May-blooming woodland bulb which, when happy, spreads vigorously.


In my opinion, it is much preferable to the gaudy and artificial-looking, plastic-looking true Hyacinth.


Photo on right is a "Bluebell Woods" in England.


My photo below is our tiny patch of it this morning. It will spread though, in time.

What a gorgeous flower, Bird Dog. I love that picture, and it reminds me of our vast fields of Texas bluebonnets in springtime. The bluebonnets do not have that truly skyblue color that makes the bluebell so ravishing. The bluebonnet color is darker and more intense with almost an undertone of black in the blue tone. But they are beautiful too, especially when mixed with the occasional lacquer red Indian Paintbrush for accent.

We have these at home too and they will spread fast. A very peaceful looking flower that appears in the most unexpected locations.

They are indeed beautiful and I have them in my garden. I removed them from the woods (a tedious job) because they will crowd out native spring ephemerals, which I prefer.

On one of our trips to Ireland, before it lost it's mind, the blue bells were blooming and quite beautiful. In some places all the flowers were missing as the many sheep like to dine on them.

When I lived in NYC we forced hyacinth bulbs in the winter. They looked lovely in their glass vases, and artificiality did not enter into it.

And that fragrance in the middle of the winter!

Bird Dog - if you plant the fragrant hyacinths outside, the flowerhead gets less formal and cylindrical... those big heads are the result of force-feeding the bulbs for maximum bloom. They naturalize quite well... and again, that scent cannot be matched.
