We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Boy, there were a lot of lessons for America in that book review. Does this remind anyone of the Covid lockdowns? "The Soviets had convinced themselves that for a tiny bit of security, it was perfectly fine to accept the reality of collectivism and a lack of freedom."
James Lindsay claims that despite the population's awareness of government propaganda and lies, the USSR didn't implode until it became the butt of the joke.
I don't think ordinary snark will work. I think it should be genuinely funny, the sort of humor that you snort before you can stop yourself.
"Fukuyama’s observation that Marxism-Leninism has come to end, “assumes that the essence of Marxism-Leninism lies in specific political arrangements rather than in its overall spiritual pretensions; but what is distinctive about totalitarian regimes is their claim to be the source of morality and arbiter of truth.”
This statement is completely wrong. The new communism isn't Marxism-Leninism, because nowadays the political system is certainly not working toward a dictatorship of the proletariat. The aim of modern government is to delegitimize the proletariat to such an extent that people don't even expect to be recognized as citizens. It's a dictatorship of the communist party; which is a very small group. We can't contact our Congressmen, or Governor. We can't vote on anything that matters. We can't discuss the tax rate. We can't control the inflation of the money supply. We can't establish security in our neighborhoods, or modify the curriculum in our schools. We can't change the trade agreements which flood America with foreign goods. We can't stop farmers from destroying the land. We can't control the fishing industry, which is devastating the marine ecosystem. We can't complain about runaway population growth in Africa. We can't even see the international agreements with the UN, and the Patent Courts, and large industrial conglomerates like Apple and Sony. We are being held captive. And those fools who think that a communist utopia is approaching will find out that the secret police are a very busy bunch of guys. Every single person in America has a two hundred-page file. The NKVD can pick you up anytime. You see, those guys made a deal. Did you ever see a Honda Accord? Well, an accord is an agreement. In other words, a contract. That contract stipulates that the earth will become part of a trade deal: as long as nobody gets in the way. The Communist Party is ruthless, and if they can't destroy America the easy way, then they'll destroy it the hard way.
