We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
How nice to see this go off without a protest! Jean must certainly not be on the Professional Left's radar... yet. While she's been published extensively, she has yet to earned the ire that others have. Living just down the road, I wish I had known about this lecture.
I was so happy to see this. She must have earned enough goodwill in the Bowdoin community that she feels safe enough to "come out", and speak candidly as a conservative. I'm wondering what will happen next though.
I live near Bowdoin too. If I'd known about it I might have gone to see the reaction of the students, and if there were any locals in attendance, to see if any of those pious holier than thou aging sandal wearing ponytails actually have an open mind.
As a '68 alum living in exile in the People's Republic but with a summer place near the campus, I too wish I had known of this. I suspect Bowdoin decided to do as Berkeley (that beacon of free speech and diversity [s off]) and try to restrict the attendance and the notoriety that would come of having a far left institution having a token conservative faculty member. Not that Jean has previously been silent. For instance, she worked hard to have the college address the findings of comprehensive National Association of Scholars study: "What Does Bowdoin Teach." https://www.nas.org/projects/the_bowdoin_project/the_conversation But she is very well liked and respected, although I wait with baited breath for the Orient and Sun articles (if any).
